Pet insurance waiting periods, explained

A waiting period is the gap between when your policy starts and when claims can be paid. If your pet shows symptoms during this window, the condition is flagged "pre-existing" — and denied for the life of the policy.

The 3 waiting periods you'll see

  • Accidents — usually 1–15 days. Shortest because injuries are sudden and verifiable.
  • Illnesses — usually 14–30 days. The window insurers use to catch pre-existing conditions.
  • Orthopedic / cruciate / hip — usually 6–12 months. The biggest trap; many owners don't realize this is separate.

How to avoid the waiting-period trap

1. Schedule a wellness exam BEFORE buying

A clean exam dated before your policy start gives you ammunition to dispute any "pre-existing" claim that comes up post-waiting period.

2. Don't ignore symptoms during the waiting window

If your pet shows a symptom, get it seen — and properly documented as resolved. An untreated symptom becomes "ongoing" and is excluded forever.

3. Pick a plan with shorter ortho waits if you have a large or active dog

Goldens, Labs, Rotties, and Shepherds have the highest cruciate-tear rates. A 12-month ortho wait is a real risk.
